Letter cutting

Good lettering brings meaning, material, form and environment together into a finished, integrated work whether that is digital, on paper, in stone, wood or other media. I specialized in letter design, lettering sculpture and inscriptional letter carving after studying sculpture at Camberwell and Byam Shaw Art Schools in London. My work includes many public and private commissions and I exhibit regularly. I am an elected member of the Royal Society of Sculptors, of Letter Exchange and of the Scottish Lettercutters Association and have worked with Memorials by Artists for many years. I have twice been lettercutter in residence at the StAnza International Poetry Festival and taught lettercutting courses in both wood and stone in Britain and Europe. My work can be found throughout Britain from Kent in the south to Shetland in the far north.

The two sides of my work, commissioned and independent, are equally important to me, with each helping to inform the other. Commissioned work is very much a collaborative process and part of my job is to understand the client’s wishes and to guide their sense of how ideas can be translated into a chosen material. Drawing is always the starting point. Ideas are developed using both pencil and digital means. The evolution of that original idea, worked by hand into a three-dimensional object, gives a unique degree of precision, subtlety and life to the finished piece.
